The Little Things are the Big Things

This past weekend during Spring & Silas's wedding, the officiant who was marrying them gave them the advice that the little things are the big things.

I like that.

And I think it's so true.

Yesterday, as Justin & I made our way across the country to Portland, OR for the What If Conference, this thought was on my mind. A lot.

It was on my mind when we were racing up the escalators trying to make our flight (never ever underestimate the traffic going to JFK), and I had my own Final Destination moment when my hoop earring fell out and landed between the metals slats of the escalator step below. Here I was trying to balance myself and my two huge overstuffed suitcases, while bending over on an escalator (if you've never tried to bend over on a moving escalator, I really don't recommend it) trying to reach my earring before we reached the top and, the way I saw it, CERTAIN DOOM. Because in my head, if the earring reached the top where the steps disappear into the mechanism below, it would surely cause some sort of gear jam that would spark a chain reaction resulting in nothing short of the whole airport exploding. I'm not even kidding. That thought legitimately ran through my head. And even though Justin was already a good twenty feet ahead of me at this point and probably couldn't for the life of him understand why I was shouting about an earring....he dropped everything-literally- and ran back to save me.

the little things are the big things.

It was on my mind when even though we were at check in a good 45 minutes before our flight, the airline still bumped us to a flight three hours later. So we just sat in the airport restaurant, not saying a word. And for a second, I thought we might just sit like that forever. But when our mac & cheese came and we were down to the last few bites, he pushed it across the table so that I could have it. Lady & the Tramp style. And right about then, I knew we were going to be ok.

the little things are the big things.

It was on my mind when we were finally being called to board our flight. We were already exhausted and we still had a six hour flight ahead of us. And as we stood at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the plane, in my mind it may as well have been a mountain. But he picked up both Think Tank bags and just handed me the lap top bag to carry. And then he winked at me. Winked at me. Like Maverick in Top Gun. And I don't know if I've ever felt more loved.

the little things are the big things.

I'm so grateful that I get to go to work every day with my best friend. And that wherever this crazy adventure takes us, it takes us there....Together.

Justin, if I don't say it enough, let me say it now. Thank you. Thank you for loving me on the days when I'm just not so lovable. For seeing past my own particular brand of crazy. For hugging me when you probably feel like wringing my neck. And for always making sure we get to wherever it is we're trying to go. Together, Just in case you didn't know, I see you. I see all that you do for us. And it counts. Every last earring saving, mac & cheese sharing, heavy-bag lifting thing you do....counts.

And I love you boo. True.
